What is the difference between ratchet straps and tie down straps?

A  ratchet strap is a type of tensioning device that is used with  a hook to secure equipment, cargo, or almost anything that can be  secured by using this tool. Ratchet straps are also known as ratchet tie downs or ratcheting tie down straps. A cam strap may also be used to tie down large objects to secure them for transportation.

A ratchet strap can be used to secure larger or irregularly shaped items that may not fit the loading area of a moving lorry, trailer, etc. Several ratchet straps are often used together to keep heavy objects in place during transit.

Are typically made out of polyester webbing with an attached ratchet device that is commonly made of steel. These types of straps are extremely strong and durable, they are long-lasting and do not damage easily. With that said, it is important to check the entire strap to check for any weakened or worn areas, to check the buckle or ratchet section to make sure it is working correctly in order to safely and effectively attach an item down using it. The ratchet strap has a loop on one end and a hook on the other which allows it to be held down by use of the ratchet. The ratchet straps have two sets of holes which allow for several different lengths. Which allows it to accommodate to larger or smaller items that need securing.

Tie down straps  are a much shorter version of a ratchet strap, they are typically used in a more temporary fashion to secure a load for a short period of time. They utilise braided polyester webbing and a black aluminum cam buckle. Allowing the strap to be not only lightweight but easily stored without taking up much space. There is typically no padding on tie down straps, so extra care must be taken when using them not to damage them in any way.

As with all types of straps, checking them before each use will minimise any potential risks when using and moving items whilst secured down with other ratchet strap or tie down cam strap.

A tie down cam strap is made to be used in a more permanent fashion and will typically have some sort of padding to make it safer to use. The typical type we see used on trailers and cars, these straps can be adjusted by loosening or tightening the ratchet mechanism to make the strap as tight as required.

The main differnece between a ratchet strap and a tie down cam strap is the way the strap is held in place. With a ratchet strap, it can be tightened to help secure an item and then left as such until required again. A tie down cam strap will typically need to be removed or loosened when not needed as these straps are designed for permanent fixing around items to make sure they remain safe during transportation use.
