The term ‘labourer’ is often one that’s seen as very low down on the hierarchy of a building site. Some people think of a labourer as a worker who has no particular skills, just someone who can lift things and offer an extra pair of hands.
That’s not the reality at all though. You’d probably be surprised to know how much involvement they have on a daily basis. On most construction sites, there are lots of labourers, especially when the project is in full flow, and they’re expected to do different things. The term is one we don’t often use either, everyone is a ‘construction worker’, from top to bottom, and without the help of “the extra pair of hands”, the job wouldn’t get done!
The work is physical, and these men and women will rely on their body strength, which is a skill in its self. Staying in tip top shape is hugely important, and we think more people should respect the work of labourers.
