Requirements for driving plant machinery

There are no requirements to have a driving licence before driving plant machinery, the only difference would be if you were driving on a public road. Because there is no requirement for a licence, then providing you are of minimum school leaving age you can drive them. The only exception is forklifts in a port where the requirement is 18. However, it does fall to the responsibility of the business owner to ensure that appropriate risk assessments are completed particularly for workers under the age of 18. It’s also important that everyone is taking the proper precautions to keep everyone safe and that professional high standards are maintained. Although there is no legal requirement for licences/training, there are training courses available, specific to the piece of machinery. This would ultimately improve the quality of work, productivity and efficiency of each machine.
